Fred and Maria are longtime friends and volunteer drivers at Meals on Wheels of Sarasota. Thank you Fred and Maria for delivering More Than a Meal everyday.

How long have you been volunteering with Meals on Wheels?

Maria: I started driving in July of 2020.

Fred: I have enjoyed volunteering for Meals on Wheels for five years.

Why do you drive for Meals on Wheels?

Maria: It started because there was a need, and I had the time. When I first joined, I had a temporary route for four months, covering for a snowbird. When he returned in November, I got my own route, which I have to this day. What I observed is that the clients are very similar in the sense that they appreciate receiving the meals and exchanging pleasantries with us drivers.

Fred: I enjoy socializing with some of the clients. Funny story- one of the clients suggested that at my age I should be receiving meals, not delivering them, they said in good humor. Some clients are more quiet but most are appreciative and we chat for a few minutes. We talk about things ranging from the weather, doctors visits, grandkids, and I even have learned new aspects of music!

Fun fact about you?

Maria: In 1986, my husband and I quit our corporate jobs and backpacked abroad for a year and a half when there were no cell phones. Our most common form of communication was sending a post card once a week.

Fred: I enjoy delivering person to person, not just writing a check to a charity.
