Kids, Local Companies and a National Nonprofit Unite to support Meals on Wheels of Sarasota.
SARASOTA – Thanks to some very special people, the homebound clients of Meals on Wheels of Sarasota are set to receive extra special presents this Valentine’s Day: Homemade cards and cookies!
On Valentine’s Day, Meals on Wheels will distribute cards handcrafted by youth volunteers from DoSomething.org, a global non-profit organization with the goal of motivating young people to make positive change, as well as from students from Ashton Elementary, Emma Booker Elementary, Gulfgate Elementary, Gocio Elementary and the Fruitville Library Youth Department.
Der Dutchman Restaurant, Publix, and Detwilers donated Valentine’s cookies. Volunteers packed the cards and cookies into red gift bags for distribution on Valentine’s Day.
DoSomething.org’s Sarasota “Love Letter” collaboration is part of its national affiliation with Meals on Wheels America, in which nearly one million have been distributed since 2014. The campaign encourages teens to make handmade Valentine’s Day cards to lift the spirits of older adults across the country during a peak time of isolation and depression.
“We are excited to partner with DoSomething.org, the many local schools and corporate donors who teamed with us on this special occasion,” says Marjorie Broughton, executive director, Meals on Wheels of Sarasota.
“These cards and cookies will warm the hearts of our clients throughout Sarasota, and we are grateful for the thoughtful volunteers who created them.”
